Detailed engineering for installing a system municipal drinking water treatment (LA17)

ISSUE

A municipality has put forward a project to modify its drinking water treatment system to improve the quality of drinking water and meet the standards of the Ministry of the Environment (MOE). The ministry has identified issues that require corrections to the original design of the water treatment system. This mandate consists of modifying the engineering design of the municipal drinking water treatment system to meet the ministry requirement.

TECHNOLOGICAL CHALLENGE

The client has to complete the remaining part of the engineering, so the system can meet the Ministry's requirements. Additionally, the client needs to execute the installation and commissioning of the system in a short period. Several engineering stages were completed and most of the equipment was installed; therefore, any modifications must consider the current condition system conditions.

RECOMMENDED SOLUTION

Complete the engineering by performing:

  • Perform the calculations and sizing of the third line of anionic and cationic filters necessary to ensure redundancy of the system.
  • Design a system for sampling the filter wash water before its disposal. Establish a control strategy and installation of instruments to manage failures of turbidimeters and UV reactors.
  • Evaluate the location in the process of the 5-micron filters that can be placed upstream or downstream of the anionic and cationic filters.

RESULTS

A compliance report has been issued to the Ministry of the Environment certifying that the installation has been carried out according to plans and specifications and that all the equipment is functional.
